I enjoyed the character enough to pick up Ultimate Spiderman and read more of the back story. And Miles remains a real teen, for good and bad. But there is really good character development. The villain is not really explained well. What I have liked about Spiderman is that there is lots of internal angst and motivation. His roommate at an elite boarding school that he attends (on scholarship) during the week and his father. Miles has an uncle too, and indirectly Miles was responsible for his death as well, but in different circumstances. His dad is the one that instills in him the responsibility for the community and the “˜with great power comes great responsibility’ that is traditionally from Peter Parker’s uncle Ben. His parents are both living, and married. Miles Morales is a teen, bitten by a spider and he becomes Spiderman.

There are aspects of the original Spiderman story. So with the movie coming out (this is not a novelization of the movie) and it being written by Jason Reynolds and it being available at my library on audiobook, I picked it up and finished it in two days. My wife took a children’s literature course over the summer for her grad school and read Jason Reynolds and I have been meaning to read something by him for a while. I did spend a lot of time watching the cartoons when I was a kid, and while I am years behind, I do watch the Marvel movies. But I like the idea of superheroes even if I have not spent a lot of time reading about them. So who is Miles Morales Suspended for? This entertaining read would be appealing to readers who enjoy action-packed superhero stories, coming-of-age tales, and stories that tackle important social issues such as race, identity, and representation.Summary: Miles Morales is Spiderman in an alternate reality. Also sprinkled in are intricate illustrations by Zeke Peña showing some of the action and detailing the big baddie that Miles has to defeat. Suspended is unique in that it has spoken word prose before a lot of major events in the book. Miles Morales Suspended also follows a theme we’ve seen before in this version of Spider-man, a teen who has a ton of responsibility and not enough bandwidth to rescue everything and everyone. What I enjoy about Reynolds’s version of Spider-Man books is that they immerse readers so intimately into the world of Miles Morales. The life of a teenage boy can be complicated and the superhero twist makes Miles relatable in two ways. He’s forced to deal with his romantic feelings for a classmate and with the anger and confusion of dealing with a racist teacher.
